╳ Interesting Similarities

Described (quite appropriately) as ‘manga-meets-Iberia’ toys, this collection of limited edition, crystal candy sets, designed by Spanish conquistador designer Jaime Hayon for Baccarat, is the not-so-subtle alliance of crystal and ceramics. Ignore the vile colours (not pictured here) though, and what you find is an interesting pairing of materials: ceramic, copper and crystal.

Ceramic and copper, teamed together, are used most commonly for industrial terminal blocks (a kind of insulating base with binding posts to make connections where sets of terminals are mounted) or for lamp holder bases. Interestingly, the aesthetic similarities between these two families of artefacts are remarkable: the fragile, but durable ceramic which contrasts so beautifully with the soft golden tones of the copper and their industrially produced manufacturing methods; yet these objects remain poles apart on the social scale.  Why?  The power of branding.

Well, as they say: "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and contrary to popular belief, you can make a silk purse from a sow’s ear!
