Yinge is Taiwan’s pottery heaven and ceramics capital. Pottery-making came to Yinge in 1804, when a potter named Wu An emigrated from mainland China and set up the first pottery business. Owing to its strategic position, close to a plentiful supply of good-quality clay and the Dahan River, the pottery industry, and later the production of finer-quality ceramics flourished.

Today, exquisite objets d'art are produced by the town's artisans and are highly regarded by collectors. It’s no wonder therefore that the town serves as a showcase for all manner of ceramic themed artefacts including these beautiful Claes Oldenburg-esque ribbon tool sculptures. The pieces are a combination of hand carved marble and small ceramic tiles arranged to create a beautiful floral pattern. Visible on some of the small triangular tiles are inscriptions, which appear to be astrological motifs; however as rich as these associations are, the sculpture functions as pure form.

These sculptures demonstrate the power of the imagination to ‘transform’ the everyday environment. Drawing inspiration from the ubiquitous (ceramic tools) and the mundane, these artworks and their media astonish with their wit, humour and metaphoric associations – very Thread Count Lab!
