╳ A Visual Feast

╳  Teatime has never been so delectable. Imogen Luddy’s witty and exquisite pieces are as delicious as the cupcakes! A recent graduate from the Royal College of Art, Ms Luddy’s practice spans wallpapers, fabrics, surfaces and ‘desirable’ products for interior environments.

╳  Based on 16th Century Italian lace, Cross Stitch Table cleverly reverses the role of the stitch; and where its usual function is to build up the surface, here its absent marks replicate the pattern. The material too is transformed from a conventional delicate fabric to a hard and masculine metal surface. Imogen Luddy’s work can be seen during Design Week with Designersblock at The Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, London between September 23rd – September 26th 2010.

╳  Using antique lace, doilies and embroidered samplers as a starting point, her work aims to subvert these traditional practices by ‘digitising' their structures and reproducing them in unexpected materials. And, by working across a wide range of media, including lasercutting, embroidery, crochet and ceramics, she seeks to find new and innovative ways of exploring traditional crafts. What could be better than that…combining the best of the old with the new?
